Museum Technician  

The National Park Service, Homestead National Monument of America (HOME)
 
Scope of Work:

As the Museum Technician, it was my responsibility to manage and care for the collections and exhibits at HOME.

 

Collections and Registration Work:

My general duties included (but not limited to):

  • Facilitated the opportunity for visitors and staff to make meaningful, personal connections with park resources by displaying objects at events, giving collections tours, and pulling objects out that would be of interest to visitors

  • Accessioned new items into the collection

  • Added new collections items into ICMS ReDiscovery

  • Photographed new collection items

  • Completed annual inventory 

  • Helped revise the Scope of Collections

  • Worked with donors to build and maintain good relationships

  • Researched items in the collection 

  • Monitor museum and collections environment (temperature/light/humidity)

  • Maintain the park’s Integrated Pest Management System 

  • Processed incoming loans

  • Created a rotating exhibit schedule for the Education Center for FY 17/18

  • Perform housekeeping duties such as cleaning exhibit and collections areas

  • Order museum supplies as needed

  • Handle, clean, move and house objects in a permanent collection

  • Prepare objects for storage or display observing NPS Museum Handbook procedures

  • Work with researchers, artist-in-residence, donors, and the media with regards to the collection

  • Record oral histories 

  • Created Loan Agreements

  • Handled incoming loaned exhibitions

 • Examine museum objects for damage or deterioration
 • Provide daily and cyclical cleaning and monitoring of artifacts
 • Perform housekeeping duties such as cleaning exhibit and collections areas
 • Order museum supplies as needed
 • Complete Condition Reports and other museum paperwork
 • Handle, clean, move and house objects in a permanent collection
 • Prepare objects for storage or display observing NPS Museum Handbook procedures

  • Safely use various curatorial-approved solutions and chemicals to remove stains from a variety of surfaces

My duties with the Dempster Archival Project continued. They included:

  • Reorganizing Subseries and Sub-Suberies

  • Reorganizing the Finding Aid

  • Making sure documents were stored properly

  • Creating an online presence for the project

  • Creating Access Policies for researchers

 

 Other Duties:​

  • Managing the front desk

  • Working with volunteers

  • Swearing in Jr. Rangers

  • Attend Staff Meetings

  • Facilitated the opportunity for visitors and staff to make meaningful, personal connections with park resources by displaying objects at events, giving collections tours, and pulling objects out that would be of interest to visitors

  • Work with researchers, artist-in-residence, donors, and the media with regards to the collection

  • Assisted with guest services, such as answering visitor questions in person ,over the phone, and in writing

  • Give interpretive information to guests as they arrive at the park and greet them

  • Promote park events and programs through items such as press releases

  • Present established curriculum based programs to students ranging from 3rd to 12th grade in on site and outreach formats- like at events such as Pioneer Days 

  • Created "What is it Wednesday" posts about collections items for social media use

  • Provided information regarding recreational opportunities and areas 

  • Operated audio/visual equipment for presentations and introductory film in Heritage Center

  • Use and record visitor tracking information such as traffic counters and hand counters
