Scope of Internship:

The main purpose of my internship was to bring organization to the blueprint portion of the Dempster Mill Archival Project. While there, I assisted in many other activities such as helping with the greater archival project, installing and deinstalling exhibitions, curating an exhibit, assisting visitors, photographing events, consulting on social media, and participating in a week long planning meeting.

Collections and Registration Work:

HOME acquired a large portion of blueprints from Dempster Mill Manufacturing Company. Ultimately, I brought organization and created a finding aid for over 20,000 blueprints. My duties included:

  • Cleaning and determining the overall condition of the blueprints

  • Surveying the blueprints to understand what we had

  • Creating and implement a hierarchy

  • Freezing the blueprints to kill pests and mold

  • Rehousing the blueprints into new folders, ensuring proper labels

  • Placing folders in flat file storage according to the hierarchy

  • Typing and official finding aid for researchers

After completing the blueprint portion of the project I assisted with the rest of the archival process. This included

  • Cleaning and removing any metal from the paper

  • Rehousing documents into new folders

  • Sorting boxes and folders into new categories

  • Ensuring proper organization of folders inside archival boxes

  • Organizing and labeling photographs

  • Caring for fragile and historic documents

 Education and Exhibition Work:

  • Participated in Long Range Interpretive Planning Meeting

  • Curated an exhibit on Dempster Mill Manufacturing Co.

  • Deinstalled two exhibitions

  • Uncrated and installed an art exhibition

 Other Duties:

  • Answering visitor questions

  • Photographing events such as the prescribed burn

  • Facilitated the “InstaMeet” during National Park Week for HOME

  • Assisting with Oral Histories project

  • Speaking about Archival Project at events

  • Working with volunteers
